Mammillaria compressa

Mammillaria compressa, commonly called mother of hundreds, is a species of cactus in the subfamily Cactoideae. It is native to northern and southern Mexico, and is cultivated as an ornamental plant. It blooms in the winter and early spring, with bell-shaped flowers that range from a purplish pink to red color. Its curved spines were traditionally used as hooks for fishing.

Description: Globular cactus, solitary at first, later forming massive clumps to 1 m wide.
Stems: Club shaped to cylindrical, bluish grey-green, up to 10 cm in diameter, up to 25 cm tall. With latex. Tubercles are prominent, close set, firm, bluntly angled and keeled. The Axil bears white wool and bristles.
Central spines: Usually absent.
Radial spines: 4-6, unequal, chalky white with brownish tips, 20-70 mm long, some very short.
Flowers: Bell shaped, purplish pink to deep red, 1-1,5 cm in diameter.
Blooming season: Winter, early spring.
Fruits: Club shaped, red.
Seeds: Brown.

Description

Mammillaria compressa is one of the larger species of Mammillaria, forming large dull, pale green mounds with sparse white spines and reddish-pink flowers in summers. It is called mother of hundreds because it forms large clumps, up to 3 feet wide when grown outdoors .

Environment

Mammillaria species like most cacti they’re drought tolerant and need very little care and attention to grow well . Plenty of sunshine will keep this cacti more than happy. Provide bright, even light to encourage tight growth and flowering. Some shade during a hot summers day can be helpful to prevent sunburn.

Allow the soil mix to become nearly dry between watering, but then water thoroughly. Suspend watering in the winter, but mist occasionally. Not enough sunlight and over-watering are common mistakes.

Use pot with good drainage and a very porous potting media.

Feed every 4 weeks with a high potassium fertiliser during summer
